Sugar Smack & Sugar Mama
If you think finding the perfect adopter for one senior breeder pup is challenging, try finding the perfect adopter to take two senior breeder pups together.
Sugar Smack and Sugar Momma, or “Mr. and Mrs. Fathead,” as they were lovingly known by their foster, arrived at TLC in July after spending around a decade in a commercial breeding facility in Mississippi until they were “no longer needed.” Living their whole life in a cage, their entire worth based on whether they could produce more puppies, meant that everything a dog deserves – love, affection, human companionship, and a warm bed – was foreign to them.
A few days with an amazing foster opened them up, and it became evident not only what wonderful companions these sweet, outdoor-loving pups would be for someone, but also, how much they loved each other. When apart, they cried, barked, and became anxious, but as soon as they were back together, they relaxed and became the playful, loving pups that their foster had fallen in love with.
As it became clear that they were bonded, finding an adopter for not one, but two senior breeder dogs became a daunting task. Finding one person to take bonded dogs can be challenging, and adopting a dog who has lived a decade in a cage can mean a lifetime of working on socialization (with people and dogs) and housebreaking.
However, after 99 days with their foster learning how to “dog,” the “happiest pups you could ever meet” found their perfect forever family and are “living the dream” with their people and a senior chihuahua brother.
