Samira

According to the ASPCA, about 390,000 dogs are euthanized at shelters each year. These shelters have exhausted all avenues of saving these dogs, but they are faced with underfunding, overcrowding, minimal resources, and other extreme circumstances.

At TLC, our mantra is “until they all have a home” and for this Happy Tail, it couldn’t be more true.

Samira is an example of what extreme circumstances mean for dogs in the south. She was in the process of being sedated for euthanization on the vet tech’s table when the vet tech saw the puppies moving around in her stomach. The vet tech stopped the process and began frantically making calls to rescues to help save Samira’s life. Just because Samira was pregnant didn’t mean there were magically resources and homes available for her. She needed help. Immediately. TLC answered.

Fast forward to a week later when Samira gave birth to 11 puppies (with arguably the best names ever: Biscuit, Breadstick, Crouton, Multigrain, Focaccia, Loaf, Naan, Pita, Pumpernickel, Rye & Toast). She was supported by one of the most dedicated and amazing foster families at TLC. Her babies were born in not only a place with a roof over their head, but a true home. They grew up healthily and surrounded by love.

When her babies reached the age to be adopted, Samira took the time to rest and enjoy being the young dog she was eager to be. She had the zoomies. She took long naps. She snuggled. Her foster family could never forget how close she had been to never experiencing those zoomies and naps.

When we save one dog, we change the lives of so many more. Saving Samira meant allowing another dog at her shelter to receive the resources they needed to survive. Saving Samira meant saving 11 more puppies. Saving Samira meant 12 adoptive families would feel the endless love of a rescue pup.

We couldn’t be happier that Samira has been adopted into a loving family who will shower her with affection for the rest of her life.
