The Big Day… Surgery Day

Hi Everyone! Chelsea’s foster mom here. First, thank you all so much for following along with Chelsea’s Spine-tingling Sage so far. Second, I wanted to update you this evening on how everything went with surgery today, since Chelsea herself is still recovering.

After 5.5 anxious hours of surgery, I received a call from our friend Dr. Rosen over at VRC. Surgery went FANTASTIC. Dr. Rosen will provide me with a more detailed explanation tomorrow, but it sounds like everything went better than imagined. A total of 7 doctors & nurses were scrubbed in for Chelsea’s procedure today. They in fact used a pedicle screw system to stabilize her spine, which has never been used this way in a dog before. How crazy and cool is that!? In addition to the screw system, the doctors used a bone graft implanted with antibiotics to help fight off the spinal infection Chelsea has painfully been battling.

In summary, Chelsea is one HUGE step closer to being pain-free and I personally couldn’t be more excited for her. Please continue to keep our sweet marshmallow puff in your thoughts as she remains in the care of VRC for a few extra days.
