BARKING BACK: CHELSEA’S SPINE-TINGLING SAGA
What do a puppy, cutting edge technology and a human neurosurgeon have in common? All three will be a part of a revolutionary surgery and extraordinary collaboration to help repair an old traumatic injury in a 9 month old puppy. This first-of-its-kind surgery will take place on December 7th after more than 5 months of investigating every avenue and stopping at nothing to give Chelsea a life without pain.
In May 2023, Chelsea, a sweet Great Pyrenees puppy, was dumped at a Mississippi shelter by being callously shoved under the fence. At just 3 months old, Chelsea’s gentle demeanor and enchanting personality wouldn’t let anyone know the severity of her situation for weeks to come. After countless vet visits, urine & blood tests, x-rays, and scans. It was finally determined that Chelsea has a spinal malformation. We feel so fortunate and grateful to have veterinarians, who not only have the expertise Chelsea needs, but also the compassion.
“The complexity of Chelsea’s case calls for an extraordinary collaboration between neurosurgeons and surgeons, both from the veterinary and human medical fields, to ensure she can enjoy a future without pain,” said Dr. Suzane Rosen, the Neurologist at VRC. “After consulting with other veterinary specialists, it became apparent that a radical stabilization surgery was essential for her to experience a pain-free and improved quality of life.”
This ambitious endeavor is not only a testament to medical progress, but to exceptional commitment to securing a brighter future for every dog. This dedication is exemplified by the investment of nearly $20,000 in this 9-month-old puppy’s future, underscoring our unwavering dedication to ensuring that every dog has the opportunity for a better tomorrow.
