Merry Christmas & Underdog Day!

Sweet Amelia hit every possible obstacle along the way. Not only did she not have a home to call her own, she was alone with her puppies.

Upon her arrival to the shelter, it was then discovered that she had extensive health issues. Ranging from an embedded collar and various cysts that needed to be surgically removed, to a previously broken leg that was left to heal incorrectly. She was also heartworm positive and the crate rest combined with medication left her overweight and made it painful to walk. When she finally made her freedom ride to TLC in March, her sweet personality was immediately apparent.

Given the pandemic, we had more than enough time to spend getting to know her. We enjoyed that extra time with her, all the while knowing something was not right with her leg. After many consultations with veterinary specialists, Amelia underwent amputation of her front right leg in May 2020. As if she had not been through enough, Amelia had a very difficult recovery. She was depressed and in pain and spent most nights crying. The once happy, affectionate girl seemed to be lost.

As her foster family, we knew the goal was to help her heal and hope that she would get back to her old self with time. It wasn’t until the day of her adoption that we saw her smile again. Her quirky, affectionate spirit returned in a matter of minutes. When she hopped into her family’s car with ease, we knew she was home.

Amelia is a ray of light that permeates through the worst of circumstances. These days, she is running around as if her surgery never happened. With all that she’s been through, you wouldn’t think she would trust people or love them nearly as much as she does. The true beauty of Amelia is not her adorable face or her sweet smile; it is her resilience to overcome any obstacle put in her way.

This one special creature inspired people to volunteer, foster and donate all because she refused to give up. She has gone from alone to beloved and leaving her paw prints on the hearts of all she has met on her journey.
