It’s Adopt a Shelter Pet Month!

Featured Dog: Petunia

Many dogs come to us with Heartworm, but thanks to TLC they are able to recover and live full, happy lives.

Heartworm treatment takes an entire month of medication and crate rest when the infected dog enters foster care. If you’ve ever been sick in bed for more than a day, you know how easy it is to get restless. Imagine how hard this can be on an active dog! Our Heartworm positive pups don’t know why their foster parents won’t let them run around being their goofy selves or why they keep getting poked with needles every day. They can’t understand that it is for their own good. But their fosters persevere and stick with it, because they know in the end their temporary family member needs the treatment to be healthy again.

Petunia is one of these Heartworm positive dogs, who came to our rescue in January 2022.

She was found emaciated and covered in fleas with her best friend (another dog, Ace), who also came to TLC. She thrived once she was cleaned up and given proper nutrition. But she still had her disease to defeat. She fought hard and received her final Heartworm treatment March 09, 2022, allowing her to finally be a dog again. She was adopted soon after.

Her Foster mom said she was “ the sweetest dog and an absolutely wonderful house guest”. She got along with every one of her foster siblings and even ignored the cat. Now she is living it up in her new home where she is once again free and forever safe.

“Petunia has been a wonderful surprise for our family. She’s the dog we didn’t know we needed. She brings so much joy to our family with her crazy antics. Can’t imagine life without her at this point.” - Petunia’s Furever Family

The average cost of Heartworm treatment is between $350 - $750 per dog depending on age & severity. As a non-profit, we rely on the support from our community to cover these costs on top of caring for so many other dogs.
