NEWS

April is Heartworm Awareness Month

We still hear from a lot of people that they don’t give their pets Heartworm preventative and may not even have them tested for it believing it “only affects dogs that live down south.” Simply put: they’re wrong. Heartworm disease, which is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito that has bitten an infected dog/cat/coyote/ferret/fox/wolf, has been diagnosed in all 50 states.

Most (if not all) rescues in this area pull dogs from southern shelters where heartworm is prevalent and, while we test dogs prior to transport, it can take 6-7 months from the time of infection until a dog will have a positive test result. That means a dog can test negative when it first comes into care locally but test positive at a later date which is one of the reasons we recommend that our adopters not only maintain the dogs they adopt from us on year-round preventatives (which can help kill the immature heartworms and sterilize adults) but that they also have their dogs re-tested for heartworm approximately 6 months after they had their first negative test and then follow the routine testing schedule recommended by their veterinarian.

The best defense is a good offense so, to protect your furbaby. Talk to your vet about Heartworm testing & the importance of using Heartworm preventatives

TLC visit to Stewart Middle School

We’d like to thank the students, faculty & staff at Stewart Middle School for inviting us for a visit to speak to them about responsible pet ownership & the life saving work we do.

In the month leading up to our visit, the kids collected donations of supplies for our dogs and were a very generous & attentive audience. We’d like to thank Ms. Bruno & TLC alum Baby for helping arrange our visit, and for everyone who donated food & supplies to us. Cassandra, Mr. Needles & Socks had a blast hanging out to dole out some puppy love.

Wags For Warriors 2017 – Everyone’s a Winner!

We know a lot of you were wondering what the results of the 2017 Wags For Warriors campaign were and we’re pleased to announce that TLC received $8,460 in donations to the campaign this year! TLC and our beneficiary veteran’s organizations were each eligible to receive up to $3,000 in matching donations. Donations to TLC from Giving Tuesday (Nov. 28) through the end of the year were automatically matched up to the cap and the pay it forward donations were distributed across the other organizations as directed by our donors.

To make sure the benefiting organizations had the best chance of reaching the maximum pay it forward donation, we let the donors know when orgs reached the cap to confirm they were OK with the match to their donation being split across the remaining organizations (we also directed the match for donations in which the donor did not specifically designate a charity/respond to our emails to organizations that hadn’t met the cap).
